Sam Belitz scored three goals and Elek McDonald added two to lead Independence to a 7-1 win over host Cuyahoga Heights on Tuesday.
Kyle Streibel and Brandon Patton also scored in the win.
“We overpowered from the get-go,” said Independence coach Ryan MacRaild. “They tried to put nine behind the ball and pack it in but we broke it down early and often. It was nice to get the young guys some playing time and experience. It’s good to know our JV can get some work in.”
Kyle Streibel recorded two assists in the win while Seamus Kral, Christian Streibel, Adam Leibel and McDonald each had one.
Ethan Manelski finished with one save. Danny Mewhinney also saw action in goal for the Blue Devils, who improved to 19-1-3 over the rival Redskins.
“The defense had a few communication breakdowns and some mental mistakes,” MacRaild said. “We gave one away in the first half on a blunder but quickly corrected it and held on to a single goal conceded.”
Independence improved to 2-0 on the year and in the Chagrin Valley Conference. The Blue Devils host Cardinal on Sept. 4.
