Blue Devils win second straight district title

After finishing second at the Division II state tournament last fall, the Independence girls’ golf team set its sights on winning the state title this season.

The Blue Devils will get their chance after shooting a 345 to win their second straight district title at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Canton on Tuesday. Laurel finished second with 354 strokes.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Independence coach Karl Schuld. “Only two teams got out this year, so there was a lot more pressure. Everybody had to perform and they all played well, from one to five. I’m very pleased with their play. District titles are hard to come by.”

Senior Sophia Trombetta shot a 66 to win her second straight district title. She carded a 74 last fall

“To do that at the district level is just off the charts,” Schuld said. “She was so comfortable out there. It’s so fun to watch her golf.”

Lyndsay Blum finished seventh with an 85.

“That’s a very solid score,” Schuld said. “She had one bad hole, a quadruple bogey when the ball shot across the green, but she had a much better game today overall. From tee to green she was very strong.”

Maddie Harper shot a 93 to finish 21st.

“She played really well from tee to green,” Schuld said. “Her back nine was better than her front, which is something we always preach about. I’m very pleased with her effort today.”

Madeline Mindzora finished 34th with a 101.

“She’s the hard-luck story of the day,” Schuld said. “Last year, she shot a 13 on one hole and this year she shot a 13 on the same hole. She started out with a couple of pars and then it hit her out of nowhere. To her credit, she hit par on the next hole and hung in there to shoot a 101. I’m very pleased with her. Over the last three or four matches she has hit the ball really well and her game sets up well for Columbus because she’s a big hitter.”

Morgan Pascarella solidified her spot as Independence’s fifth golfer when she finished with a 105, good for 44th place.

“That was her first real test of the season,” Schuld said. “She played in the league tournament but this was more challenging. She’ll be our No. 5 at state. She’s just so athletic. You tell her to do something and she figures it out. Her putting kind of drove her nuts today, but tee to green she was great.”

The state tournament will be held at the Ohio State University Gray Course on Oct. 13-14.
