CVC Athletes of the Week

Athletes from Beachwood, Berkshire, Chagrin Falls, Harvey, Hawken, Independence and West Geauga have been named the Chagrin Valley Conference Players of the Week for the week ending January 13.

Each player was nominated by his or her coach.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nick BislichName: Nick Bislich
School: Hawken
Grade: 12
Stats: Scored 18 points with 11 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal in two games
Coach’s Quote: “Nick is a senior who is new to the basketball program this year,” Hawken coach Seth Lieberman said. “Nick works hard day in and day out and is coming on strong for us at the right time.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Courtney CzekajName: Courtney Czekaj
School: Berkshire
Grade: 10
Stats: Scored 9 points with 3 rebounds, 2 steals, three 3-pointers and took 3 charges in a game against Independence
Coach’s Quote: “Courtney is the definition of what our team is about,” Berkshire coach James Bosley said. “She always brings her best effort and is one of our best defenders. She is also becoming a really good shooter as well. She always puts the team first, which was shown by taking three charges against Independence.”

Nevada MeltonName: Nevada Melton
School: Harvey
Grade: 12
Stats: Recorded 15 points with 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and a block in a game against Hawken
Coach’s Quote: “Nevada had a good all-around performance against Hawken last Saturday, impacting the game on both ends of the floor for 30-plus minutes,” Harvey coach Jerimi Acree said. “It’s an honor to be her coach.”

Madison PrinceName: Madison Prince
School: Beachwood
Grade: 10
Stats: Scored 22 points with 17 rebounds and 5 assists in a game against Orange
Coach’s Quote: “Madison played a complete game offensively and defensively pushing Orange to the brink in a tough loss,” Beachwood coach Grant Wilson said.

SWIMMING

Hannah ZahniserName: Hannah Zahniser
School: West Geauga
Grade: 11
Stats: Finished first in diving at the Perry Invitational with 225.30 points and 12th at the Northeast Classic with 343.60

WRESTLING

Trenton KruseName: Trenton Kruse
School: Chagrin Falls
Grade: 11
Stats: Finished the Beachwood Quad with a 2-0 record and 1 pin
Coach’s Quote: “Trenton is opening up and it shows as his offense came up big in two victories this weekend and the final one with a pin against Beachwood,” Chagrin Falls coach Peter Cimoroni said. “He is one of the veteran leaders on our team and possesses a great work ethic.”

Nick RossiName: Nick Rossi
School: Independence
Grade: 12
Stats: Finished the South Side Duals with a 5-0 record and 3 pin
Coach’s Quote: “Nick had a great weekend going 5-0 with three pins,” Independence coach Ken DeAngelis said. “A couple of the kids that he pinned were good wrestlers and don’t get pinned very often. Nick has really been working hard in practice this year and has been a great teammate and is seeing some rewards from those good choices. Nick is an explosive wrestler and he’s really fun to watch. Every time he steps on the mat I have total confidence that not only can he win, but he can score bonus points. He reached 100 career wins at the first tournament this year and continues to build on that total.”

He also created and publishes OhioVarsity.com, an online publication dedicated to providing hyperlocal coverage to area high school athletic programs. Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986. He played football, wrestled and was an all-Geauga county baseball player (1986). He lives in Chardon with his wife Paulette and their children.
