CVC Football: League Play Opens With Thursday Night Slate

The chase for championships begins Thursday night.

After three weeks of nonconference football, teams across the CVC turn their attention to league play for the first time this season, adding an extra layer of importance to a four-game Thursday night slate.

Chagrin Falls travels to Fairview for just the fourth recorded meeting between the programs since 1972, while unbeaten West Geauga visits Hawken with the Wolverines looking to open a season 4-0 for the first time since 2011.

Lutheran West heads to Orange in the fifth recorded meeting between those programs, and Beachwood travels to Fairport Harding, where the Skippers will try to earn their first recorded win over the Bison since 1975.

Those matchups also bring plenty of history with them. West Geauga is coming off its 88th recorded shutout since 1972, Beachwood reached 40 points for the 54th time in that span last week, and Chagrin Falls has topped 40 points 83 times in the OhioVarsity historical database.

Thursday is only the beginning of the conference race, but for teams with championship aspirations, every league game from this point forward carries added weight.

Chagrin Falls at Fairview

Steve Hare is the Chagrin Valley Conference's Sports Information Director. He also created and publishes OhioVarsity.com, an online publication dedicated to providing hyperlocal coverage to area high school athletic programs. Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986. He played football, wrestled and was an all-Geauga county baseball player (1986). He lives in Chardon with his wife Paulette and their children.

Chagrin Falls finishes state runner-up; Independence’s Schuette tied for individual lead

Chagrin Falls finished as Division II girls state runner-up, West Geauga's Dylan Phillips placed fifth, and Perry's Benjamin Dame tied for 16th. Independence's Kaden Schuette and Orange's Anuja Patel entered the final round in state title contention.

Orange leads CVC contingent into OHSAA girls tennis state championships

Orange leads the Chagrin Valley Conference with three state-qualifying entries, including district singles champion Genevieve Hayden. Hawken and Willoughby South also will compete at the OHSAA Girls Tennis State Championships in Mason.
