CVC teams advance in postseason

Four Chagrin Valley Conference teams opened the postseason with a win on Monday.

Beachwood opened the playoffs with a 3-2 win over Keystone, Berkshire topped United, 2-0, Brooklyn beat Fairview, 14-7, and Trinity edged league rival Wickliffe, 4-3.

The Bison improved to 13-10 overall with their one-run win over Keystone.

Josh Rosenblitt pitched a complete game. He allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out 11 in seven innings of work. Jacob Greene led the Bison at the plate as he finished the game 2-for-3.

Luke Bennett, Vincent Crenshaw, Brenden Malek, Rosenblitt, and Clay Tepper also had hits for the Bison, who advanced to play at Wooster Triway in a sectional final on Wednesday.

Berkshire’s Jack Jacobs threw a one-hitter and struck out 13 in leading the Badgers to their shutout win.

Cayden Skolaris had an RBI single in the second inning and the Badgers scored their second run on an error in the fifth.

Berkshire will play at Warren Champion in a sectional final on Wednesday.

Brooklyn scored runs in bunches to knock off Fairview.

The Hurricanes scored six runs in the third, three in the fourth, and two in both the fifth and sixth innings. They closed out the game with one in the seventh.

Aiden Starr finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Angel Hernandez, Derreck Wrost, and Nate Wilson each recorded two hits in the win.

Starr picked up the pitching victory after allowing four earned runs on nine hits and fanning six in six innings. James Trunkett, who tripled in the game, threw the final inning. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits.

Brooklyn will play at Waynedale on Wednesday.

Trinity held off Wickliffe in an all-CVC sectional semifinal.

The Trojans tied the game at 1-1 in the second and took a 3-1 lead in the third. The Blue Devils cut their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning but the Trojans tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and then held off the Blue Devils in the seventh.

Wickliffe loaded the bases in the seventh and scored one run on a sacrifice fly but Ian Anderson struck out the next batter to strand the Blue Devils’ baserunners at first and second.

Anderson went the distance for the Trojans. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out nine.

Matt Trimble led the Trojans at the plate with three hits in four at-bats.

Wickliffe’s Calvin Cackowski took the hard-luck loss on the mound. He allowed just three earned runs on eight hits and struck out 10.

Trinity will play at Black River on Wednesday.

Crestwood and Kirtland both lost extra-inning games.

LaBrae edged the Red Devils, 6-5, and Jefferson scored seven runs in the top of the eighth and limited Kirtland to just four runs in the bottom half of the inning to win, 11-8.

Orange had its games against Northwest halted in the ninth inning with the score tied 6-6.

In softball, Cuyahoga Heights’ tournament run came to an end with a 6-1 loss to Hillsdale in a Division IV district semifinal.

Hillsdale scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added three more in the fifth.

Kayla Vallee tripled to start the Heights fourth and scored on Maddie Dopson’s double, but the RedWolves couldn’t push across any more runs in the setback.
