Nine Chagrin Valley Conference wrestlers opened the postseason by winning a title at one of three different Division II sectional tournaments.
Perry won three of those titles on the way to claiming the team title at the Lake Catholic sectional.
Riley Rowan (106), Brock Christian (132), and Calvin Rowan (144) each won their respective weight classes at Lake Catholic and will be a No. 1 seed at the Perry District Tournament next weekend.
Perry’s Dominic Ciolli (2nd at 113), Ryan Brubaker (2nd at 157), Ethan Hicks (2nd at 165), Kenny Walker (2nd at 215), Zach Bellissimo (3rd at 120), Drew Smith (3rd at 126), Calvin Peters (3rd at 138), Domenick LaMacchia (3rd at 150), Chuck Thomas (3rd at 175), and Gavin Nickerson (4th at 190) also earned a district berth by placing among the top four.
Chagrin Falls’ Sam Partain also won a sectional title at Lake Catholic by winning the 150-pound weight class.
Chagrin Falls also placed five other wrestlers among the top six.
Hunter Blair (120), Harrison Fritz (126), Michael Moissis (157), and Camryn Macik (175) all will serve as district alternates after placing fifth on Saturday. Johannes Rohr placed sixth at 190 pounds.
West Geauga placed second as a team at the Harvey Sectional.
The Wolverines placed 10 wrestlers among the top four with two champions and one district alternate.
Jack Sparent won the 138-pound title and Lucas Sadler topped the podium at 285 pounds.
Ty Boze (106), Evan Baughner (113), Matthew Obranovich (120), and Justin Artino (150) all placed second at their respective weight classes. Nick Chioromonte (126), Ethan Bartlett (157), and Cole Mastrangelo (165) all placed third, and Thomas Randau (132) was fourth.
Mike Cavasinni will serve as a district alternate for the Wolverines after placing fifth at 144 pounds.
Other CVC wrestlers who won a sectional title at Harvey included Orange’s TeAndre Allen (126) and Edgewood’s Kyle Vencil (132) and Zeke Lucas (175).
Second place finishers included Edgewood’s Kyle Biller (144) and Troy Peterson (285) and Orange’s Fred Berland at 165.
Other district qualifiers included Edgewood’s Quinten Gaines (4th at 126) and Josh Biller (3rd at 150); Geneva’s Michael Hupertz (3rd at 215); Harvey’s Angel Soto (4th at 113), Robert Boykin (4th at 138), and Antonio Poole (4th at 190); Orange’s Yavuz Sumer (3rd at 113), Walker Smith (4th at 157), Josh Decipeda (3rd at 175), Grant Bell (3rd at 190), and Terrance Davis (4th at 215).
Edgewood’s Justin Jury (138), Geneva’s Liam Distler (120), Matthew Van Sickle (157), and Nigel Platt (165), and Orange’s Karim Sayah (106) all will serve as district alternates after placing fifth on Saturday.
Sixth place finishers included Edgewood’s Dakota Dalton (106), Austin Paneto (157), and Chris Skwera (165); Geneva’s Lane Distler (113); Harvey’s Charles Swietlik (215); Orange’s Gabe Pflaum (120), Rashaud Barnes (132), and Donelle Taylor (285); and West Geauga’s Cory Holden (175).
Five Beachwood wrestlers finished among the top four at the Beachwood Sectional and will compete at the Perry District next weekend.
Uzonna Nzekwe placed second at 215 while Joshua Greenwood (144), Eric Steckner (165), and Shane Fowler (175) placed third. Caleb White was fourth at 106 and Jacob Goldman finished sixth at 157.
