Edgewood runners shine at Early Bird Invitational

BURTON—Edgewood’s girls’ cross country team took home the team championship and the Warriors’ finished second in the boys’ race at the 2019 Berkshire Early Bird Invitational on Saturday.

The Warriors conquered the flat course at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. The girls finished with 39 points while Madison finished a distant second with 96.

Lydia Randolph and Eve Brunell finished first and second in the girls’ race with Randolph clocking a time of 19:26 and Brunell coming in right behind her at 19:27. Layce Artman (9th, 20:05), Abbie Metcalf (13th, 20:34), Caroline Nelson (14th, 20:34) and Alaina Neczeporenko (17th, 20:45) all finished among the top 20 for the Warriors and Monica Hamalainen placed 30th with a time of 21:34.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin won the boys’ team title with 53 points. The Warriors closed out the meet with 77 points.

Griffin Obermiyer led the way for the Warriors with a time of 16:22.2, good for sixth place, and Joey Jafarace finished a hair behind him at 16:22.7.

Granison Hill placed 11th with a time of 16:39.

Nick Branch (26th, 17:32.0), Kurt Corrigan (27th, 17:32.7), Ian McIntyre (32nd, 17:53), and Nate Nash (33rd, 17:54) also competed for the Warriors.

Haley Adams
Haley Adams is a 2016 graduate of Cardinal High School. She is currently in her third year at Hiram College with a major in Communications and a minor in Writing. Haley, a three-sport standout at Cardinal, has participated in many athletic events at Hiram and plans to become a sports broadcaster.
