Four champions, seven medalists highlight CVC boys golf postseason tournament

This story first appeared onOhioVarsity.com

Four tournaments produced four champions, seven medalists, and plenty of momentum heading into the next stage of the postseason.

claimed the Chagrin Division championship with the lowest team score of the four tournaments, while rolled to the Lake Division crown, captured the Metro and dominated the Valley.

Individual competition was even tighter.

Three of the four tournaments ended with co-medalists. Orange’s and West Geauga’s shared the Chagrin title with 72s; Independence’s and Fairview’s matched 80s in the Metro, and Kirtland teammates and each carded an 83 in the Valley.

Perry’s was the lone outright medalist, shooting a 77 while helping the Pirates complete a memorable Lake Division championship run.

Chagrin Division

Orange did just enough to hold off West Geauga in the tightest team championship race of the four divisions.

The Lions posted a 316, four strokes better than the Wolverines’ 320. Hawken finished third at 332, with South only one stroke behind the Hawks at 333.

Orange’s championship effort was led by Thomas, who shot a 72 to share medalist honors with West Geauga’s Phillips.

The two were three shots clear of Hawken’s , who finished third with a 75. Chagrin Falls’ followed with a 76, and West Geauga’s rounded out the top five with a 77.

Orange also received a 78 from , an 81 from , and an 85 from among its scoring options.

Lake Division

Perry left little doubt in the Lake Division.

The Pirates shot a 328 and finished 30 strokes ahead of runner-up Madison, giving Perry a championship that carried some extra significance for Dame and his teammates.

Dame earned medalist honors with a 77, four shots ahead of Madison’s .

Perry placed four golfers among the top six, with third at 82, tied for fourth at 83 and tied for sixth at 86.

Dame wasn’t completely satisfied with his own round, particularly after opening with a triple bogey, but he responded rather than allowing the difficult start to derail his day.

“I wasn’t the most pleased with today’s round based off how I played, but I was happy to pull through to win the Conference MVP,” Dame said.

His short game helped him recover.

“Throughout the round I felt like my chipping and speed on the greens was the strength of the round today,” Dame said. “Definitely gave me more comfort as the round went on.”

Instead of viewing the opening triple as something that ruined his day, Dame saw it as an early mental test.

“A key hole today was the first hole,” he said. “I ended up getting a triple, and it just kinda helped me mentally be better and be patient for the rest of the round.”

The championship was particularly meaningful for the Perry senior.

“It was definitely a good feeling winning the CVC both as a team and individually, knowing it is my senior year and that we haven’t won a CVC Championship for 30 years,” Dame said.

Metro Division

Fairview used remarkable balance at the top of its lineup to pull away from the Metro Division field.

The Warriors shot a 335, finishing 19 strokes ahead of Independence.

Four Fairview golfers finished among the top five places. Maxx Sather shared medalist honors with Independence’s Kaden Schuette after each shot an 80, while Sam Allen finished third with an 82, was fourth at 86, and tied for fifth at 87.

Schuette’s 80 didn’t come easily.

“Even though I didn’t have my best, I felt like I grinded through it and never gave up even when it got really hard,” Schuette said.

Schuette said the course was difficult and he frequently found himself having to recover after putting himself in challenging positions. Several par saves prevented the round from getting away from him.

“I had a few really good par saves to keep my round from getting out of hand a few times, which really kept me in it throughout the round,” he said.

The Independence golfer also left the tournament believing the Blue Devils still have another level to reach.

“Our team is in a little bit of a rough spot right now,” Schuette said. “We haven’t had our best for a few tournaments now. I think we’re really close to breaking through here towards the end of the season and now it’s all about grinding and trying our best to be ready for postseason play.”

Even a share of medalist honors left Schuette hungry for more.

“It was my goal to be the medalist, so it does sting a little bit to not earn the full medalist honor,” he said, “but I just got to get back to practice and be ready for the postseason ahead.”

Valley Division

Kirtland didn’t play the way its golfers believe they are capable of playing.

The Hornets still won the Valley Division championship by 38 strokes.

Kirtland shot a 341 and swept the first three individual positions. Scalish and Nead shared medalist honors with 83s, finished third at 85, and gave the Hornets four of the top five with a 90.

For Scalish, the day included a couple of birdies, some costly holes and enough good golf to earn a share of the individual championship.

His driver was particularly consistent, allowing him to leave himself manageable approach shots. After beginning on No. 18, Scalish birdied No. 2 — his third hole of the day — and followed it with several pars. He later opened No. 10 with another birdie.

“My round was pretty good,” Scalish said. “There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement. I had a couple birdies, but then I also had a couple big numbers that I’d like to try and stay away from in future rounds.”

Winning despite not playing their best left Scalish encouraged about what could be ahead for the Hornets.

“Winning today really builds confidence for our team going into sectionals,” Scalish said. “We all know that we can shoot much better than that, and honestly today we didn’t bring our A-game, but we still got it done. Now we just have to forget about it and move on to the next one.”

Sharing medalist honors with Nead made the day even more memorable.

“Sharing medalist honors with Nick is really cool cause I’ve always been one of the lower guys on the team and now I’m up there shooting with him,” Scalish said. “But we both know that we can shoot much better than that when we really dial in our game.”

Nead was similarly demanding of himself despite the victory. His short game was the best part of his round, and his biggest focus was refusing to allow one bad hole to become two.

“I kept reminding myself that I can do a lot better than my last hole and put the bad shots behind me,” Nead said.

He also believes Kirtland has more to show.

Nead said he wasn’t particularly happy with his own play or the team’s overall performance, especially with bigger postseason goals ahead, but he knows what the Hornets are capable of producing.

Having Scalish alongside him atop the leaderboard reinforced that confidence.

“I am super happy that I have a teammate tied for medalist honors with me,” Nead said. “It gives me encouragement that we have depth.”

CVC Overall: Orange posts low team total, Thomas and Phillips lead all golfers

The four division tournaments were separate competitions, so scores aren’t a true head-to-head comparison. Course setup, conditions, and the fields were different.

Still, stacking the four tournaments strictly by raw score provides an interesting look at how the CVC’s best performances compared.

Orange produced the lowest championship team total with a 316, followed by Perry’s 328, Fairview’s 335 and Kirtland’s 341.

Division Champions by Raw Score

  1. Orange — 316 — Chagrin Division
  2. Perry — 328 — Lake Division
  3. Fairview — 335 — Metro Division
  4. Kirtland — 341 — Valley Division

That makes Orange the unofficial overall team winner by raw score, 12 strokes ahead of Perry.

Individually, the Chagrin Division produced the two lowest rounds of the four tournaments.

Thomas and Dylan Phillips each shot 72, three strokes better than Bai’s 75.

Fischer followed with a 76, while Anna Phillips and Dame each shot 77.

Heiser’s 78 was the only other round below 80.

Four golfers then landed at 80 — Boose, Ralph Zappola, Schuette and Sather — creating an 11-player overall top 10 because none of the four can fairly be removed from the tie.

Overall Top 10 by Raw Score

  1. Charlie Thomas, Orange 72 Chagrin
  2. Dylan Phillips, West Geauga 72 Chagrin
  3. Evan Bai, Hawken 75 Chagrin
  4. Peter Fischer, Chagrin Falls 76 Chagrin
  5. Anna Phillips, West Geauga 77 Chagrin
  6. Ben Dame, Perry 77 Lake
  7. Samuel Heiser, Orange 78 Chagrin
  8. AJ Boose, Chardon 80 Chagrin
  9. Ralph Zappola, Willoughby South 80 Chagrin
  10. Kaden Schuette, Independence 80 Metro
  11. Maxx Sather, Fairview 80 Metro

By raw score, Thomas and Dylan Phillips share the unofficial overall individual championship at 72.

More importantly for the teams involved, all four division champions left the CVC postseason tournament with something tangible — a championship — and another opportunity ahead to prove that their best golf is still to come.
