Hawken boys are headed back to state

For the second consecutive year, Hawken’s boys’ golf team finished second at the district tournament and will compete for a state title.

The Hawks finished with 313 strokes, just four behind Division II Windmill Lakes District champion Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the state tournament.

Thomas Wong shot a 73 to win an individual district title. Drew Covitt finished tied for fourth place with a 75 and Quinn Petersen and Thomas Hill rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with an 82 and 83, respectively. Cooper Bryan carded an 87 for Hawken.

Perry’s Nick Carnovale finished tied for 14th place with an 80 and Lutheran West’s Jakob Gross also earned a top 25 placement as he shot an 82 to finish 23rd overall. Beachwood’s James O’Neill and Matt Blumenthal both shot 84 to finish tied for 28th and Edgewood’s Ryan Green placed tied for 36th with an 86. West Geauga’s Travis Johnson finished 47th with a 90.

Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986.
