GATES MILLS—Hawken opened postseason play with a convincing 5-0 win over visiting Geneva in a Division II sectional championship game on Wednesday.
With the win, the Hawks advanced to Monday’s district semifinals against the winner of the No. 1 West Geauga vs. No. 9 Jefferson game that will be played on Thursday. West Geauga already has beaten Hawken this season but the Hawks are ready for a potential rematch.
“I’m looking forward for a chance to play them again and show them who we are,” said Hawken freshman Carmen Cicerini, who scored one of Hawken’s five goals.
Hawken started quickly and never slowed down.
Junior Lindy Bobrow struck first with a top-shelf goal in the 14th minute. She also scored again in the 65th and 71st minutes to record a hat trick. She used her speed to score on a breakaway goal to close out her three-goal night.
Geneva had an opportunity to tie the game in the 23rd minute, but a breakaway opportunity went wide for the Eagles in their best scoring chance of the day.
Hawken rounded out the game with two more scores. Cicerini scored in the 30th minute and junior Dani Doncevic scored quickly on a breakaway in the second half to complete the scoring for the Hawks.
The Hawks improved to 7-7-3 on the year while Geneva closed out the season with a 7-9-1 record. The Eagles did win the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division title earlier this season.
