The postseason kicked off for Division II golfers on Monday and Chagrin Valley Conference members Hawken and Independence both claimed sectional titles.
Hawken won the Division II boys’ golf sectional at Quail Hollow while Independence won the Division II girls’ sectional at Punderson Golf Course.
The Hawks finished with 322 strokes, nine less than second-place NDCL, who finished with 331. Jefferson placed third with 350 strokes. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to next week’s district golf tournament.
Jack Zeid led the Hawks with a score of 78, good for second place overall. Quinn Petersen shot an 80 to finish fourth, Peyton O’Keefe tied for fifth with an 81, and Bryan Cooper closed out the Hawken scoring with an 83, good for 11th overall. Vince Vomberger also played for the Hawks. He shot an 89, good for 18th place.
Grand Valley’s Hagan Hejduk and Edgewood’s Mason Feather both advanced to districts as individuals. Hejduk finished fifth with an 81 while Feather was 10th with an 82.
Edgewood’s Jimmy Johnston (12th, 84), Kirtland’s Victor Alfieri (12th, 84) and Aaron Schulz (16th, 87), and Wickliffe’s Calvin Cackowski (15th, 85) all placed among the top 20.
Over at Punderson, Independence and Hawken tied for the top spot with 364 strokes. The Blue Devils won the title on the fifth-scorer tie-breaker.
Southeast placed third with 371 strokes and Laurel was fourth with 395. The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district tournament.
Hawken’s Ella Wong claimed a share of medalist honors with her tournament-low 78. Teammate Kate Petersen placed third with an 80 and Juliana Pollard also placed among the top 10 with an 87, good for eighth place. Marissa Grossberg closed out the scoring with a 119.
Molly McGreal led Independence with an 85, good for sixth place. Emma Konopa (11th, 90), Macey McGhee (14th, 92), and Kate Coljohn (18th, 97) closed out the Independence scoring. Hillary Esper also competed for the Blue Devils. Her 103 was used to break the Hawken-Independence tie for first place.
Perry’s Emily Capitosti placed ninth with a score of 89. She advanced to the district tournament as an individual.
Edgewood’s Kaci Kanicki (11th, 90) and Taylor Racut (19th, 98), Lutheran West’s Callie Wabeke (11th, 90) and Julia Colton (19th, 98), and Orange’s Kerry Kelly (17th, 96) also placed among the top 20.
