Hawken sweeps Chagrin Division cross country titles

PERRY–Hawken’s cross country teams kicked off the postseason by winning Chagrin Division titles at the Chagrin Valley Conference meet on Saturday at the Perry Outdoor YMCA.

The Hawks won the boys’ race with 32 points while West Geauga (47) was second and Geneva (90) was third. Hawken repeated as the Chagrin Division champions in the girls’ race. The Hawks scored 58 points while Edgewood (62) was second and Geneva (65) was third.

Hawken sophomore Nick Garcia-Whitko won the Chagrin Division boys’ race with a time of 16:49. He finished third in 2020.

The Hawks also landed four more runners among the top 15.

Senior David Hamilton placed fifth in 17:19, sophomore Parker Carrus was seventh in 17:24, sophomore Sam Cohen placed eighth in 17:29, and freshman Jeremy Hofius was ninth in 17:49.

Geneva’s Alex Kolhoff (2nd, 17:01), West Geauga’s Daniel Kearns (3rd, 17:09), Matt Dienes (4th, 17:14), John Mikes (12th, 17:52), Chris Whiting (13th, 17:56), and Grant Congdon (15th, 18:12), Edgewood’s Granison Hill (6th, 17:22) and Kurt Corrigan (14th, 17:59), Perry’s Isaac Balistreri (9th, 17:37), and Beachwood’s Gregory Perryman (10th, 17:40) also finished among the top 15.

In the girls’ race, a Hawken runner finished first for the third straight year as freshman Brielle Collins edged Edgewood freshman Maddie Crooks for first place. Collins finished in 19:17 while Crooks crossed the finish line in 19:40.

Hawken’s Elena Padley (7th, 20:29), West Geauga’s Grace Gyetko (3rd, 20:03), Skye Hackathorn (10th, 20:47), and Taylor Deets (15th, 21:22), Orange’s Kate Halloran (4th, 20:18), Perry’s Cori Lynch (5th, 20:22), Grace McKoon (12th, 21:12), and Holly Vis (13th, 21:19), Geneva’s Renee Tetlow (6th, 20:28), Mya Evangelista (9th, 20:45), and Grace Dubsky (11th, 20:48), and Edgewood’s Layce Artman (8th, 20:37) and Tammy Liplin (14th, 21:21) also finished among the top 15.

Haley Adams is a 2016 graduate of Cardinal High School. She is currently in her third year at Hiram College with a major in Communications and a minor in Writing. Haley, a three-sport standout at Cardinal, has participated in many athletic events at Hiram and plans to become a sports broadcaster.
