Hornets blank Geneva

KIRTLAND—Due to the Coronavirus, the Chagrin Valley Conference won’t recognize league champions this fall.

But, the Kirtland Hornets know what they accomplished following a 2-0 win over visiting Geneva at Recreation Park on Tuesday.

“It’s always good to go undefeated in the conference so there’s a positive there,” Kirtland coach John Valentic said.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 8-3-1 overall and closed out CVC Valley Division play with a perfect 6-0 record.

The Hornets outscored their league opponents, 47-4.

Nico Podojil-Schlesinger scored a first-half goal and Marko Cubela added one in the second half for the Hornets.

“I told the boys it wasn’t our best performance or our cleanest performance but winning ugly is still a win,” Valentic said. “I’m happy with that and there were some good things. We moved the ball well, our crosses were good and we moved defensively. We didn’t concede a goal but there were still some things missing on the offensive end that we’re going to try to work on in the next couple days of practice.”

Kirtland hosts Wickliffe on Oct. 12 and will close out the regular season at home against Lake Catholic on Oct. 15.

The Hornets will learn this weekend what their postseason future looks like as the district seeds will be announced on Sunday.

“We’re ready,” Valentic said. “I’m not sure where we’re going to be with this new format but we’re ready no matter where we get placed and we look forward to it.”
