Independence, Edgewood win postseason titles

NEWBURY—Independence won its fourth straight league title while Edgewood unseated defending champion Perry on Tuesday at Punderson Golf Course.

The Blue Devils finished with 335 strokes to win the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division title while Edgewood shot 384 to beat defending champion Perry by 11 strokes.

Independence finished undefeated in league play and won the postseason tournament title to lock up its fourth straight league championship. Edgewood and Perry split their regular season dual matches so the winner of the postseason tournament also secured the Valley Division crown.

Hawken’s Ella Wong, the defending Division II state champion, won her fourth consecutive Chagrin Division postseason tournament title but it didn’t come easily as Independence sophomore Macey McGhee posted her career-best score of 80, but went into her final hole tied with Wong.

Independence’s Molly McGreal (84), Hillary Esper (85), Kate Coljohn (86), Bel Trombetta (88), and Emma Konopa (88), Hawken’s Kate Petersen (84) and Keira Chang (101), and Chagrin Falls’ Emma O’Brien (100) rounded out the top 10.

Kanicki shot a 90 to hold off defending champion Emily Capitosti of Perry, who carded a 93 to finish third. Edgewood’s Annie Johnston shot a 91 to finish as the Valley Division runner-up.

Perry’s Addy Trefzger (95) and Emma Pietrzak (96), Edgewood’s Avery Vencill (99) and Zoe Naus (104), Lakeside’s Tayler Wilber (100), and Berkshire’s Aurora Martin (101) and Keelee Keidel (107) also placed among the top 10.
