PEPPER PIKE—West Geauga freshman Josh Irwin had a big day on Sunday.
The reigning Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division MVP scored 22 points to lead the Honor All-Stars to a 107-99 win over the Duty All-Stars in the 2018 Ohio Varsity Underclassmen Showcase presented by ScoreStream.com at Ursuline College.
Irwin, who averaged 15.2 points, 11 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals to lead West Geauga to the CVC championships, ended his day by being named the Ohio Varsity Freshman of the Year.
Jenson Yonker of Chagrin Falls contributed to the win with 17 points and Mayfield’s Julius Vann added 15. Kirtland’s Seann McGill pitched in with 14 and Riverside’s Andrew Keller and Madison’s Chris Blauman also scored in double figures for the Honor All-Stars with 12 and 11, respectively.
Keller scored 23 in last year’s Underclassmen Showcase.
Kenston’s Ryan Long scored a game-high 28 points for the Duty All-Stars with three 3-pointers in the contest. Harvey’s Daylin Davis dropped 20 points in the losing effort and North’s Jimmy Arnold and Wickliffe’s Neshawn Brown reached double figures with 14 and 11, respectively.
Arnold hit four 3-pointers to move into second place all-time on the Ohio Varsity Senior Shootout and Underclassmen Showcase leaderboard.
North’s Rob Koelling coached the Honor All-Stars while Fairport Harding’s Matt Cardina led the Duty All-Stars in the event, which was an official fundraiser for The Wounded Warrior Project. Each team in the contest represented one of the WWP’s core values.
Madison senior Nate Fawver, who played in the Senior Shootout on Sunday, won the 3-point contest, which was held at halftime of the Underclassmen Showcase.
