Leibal powers Independence past Cardinal

Adam Leibal scored three goals to lead Independence to a 6-0 win over visiting Cardinal at Stan Skoczen Stadium on Tuesday.

Seamus Kral, Emmett Stralka and Kyle Streibel also scored for the Blue Devils, who improved to 3-0 overall and in Chagrin Valley Conference play.

“Adam Leibal had a good shift putting in three mostly off of corner play into the box,” said Independence coach Ryan MacRaild. “He did a nice job putting the ball on frame. Their goalie had to stand on his head tonight making 18 saves, but we did hit a ton of shots right at him to help matters.”

The big win allowed the Blue Devils to clear their bench as the JV players saw action for nearly 24 minutes in the first half and 28 in the second.

“We understood that this game would be a chance to score a few goals and get the young guys some playing time,” MacRaild said. “Cardinal played with heart and hustle for having only one sub, they worked their tails off. Our young guys had some opportunities to play and created some chances off set pieces and corners, but couldn’t quite find the back of the net on their shift but it was good to get them some minutes tonight.”

Casey McGhee, Christian Streibel, Elek McDonald and Kral all had assists for the Blue Devils while Ethan Manelski recorded two saves in goal.

Cardinal’s Austin Miller recorded 18 saves for the Huskies.
