Perry, Berkshire advance in postseason play

Perry and Berkshire kept their postseason runs intact with wins on Wednesday and will meet in a Division III district semifinal on Monday at Struthers High School.

The Pirates upended visiting Champion, 8-3, while the Badgers took down Newton Falls, 6-1.

Perry broke a scoreless tie with one run in the bottom of the third and then broke the game open with a six-run fourth.

Champion got on the board with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but the Pirates slammed the door to clinch their sectional title.

Logan Buehner picked up the pitching victory after allowing one earned run on one hit with nine strikeouts in six innings. Jimmy Ashburn pitched the seventh inning. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits and struck out one.

Cade Henderson and Trent Taylor both finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Henderson scored one run and knocked in two more while Taylor recorded two RBI. Buehner collected a pair of hits, and Kyle Rhineberger, Owen McKoon, and Jason Pentek also had hits for the Pirates, who improved to 18-6.

Berkshire and Newton Falls were deadlocked through four innings before the Badgers plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth.

With Patrick Brancel on the mound, the Badgers’ run production held up.

Brancel allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out 12 in a complete-game victory. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

Sam Barcikoski and Jack Hastings both finished 2-for-4. Barcikoski scored two runs while Hastings knocked in one.

Ethan Martin, Louie Filby, Bear Masink, and Oliver Miller each had one hit for the Badgers, who improved to 15-8. Martin and Filby both knocked in two RBI.
