Spartans fall short in state Final Four

Convoy Crestview closed the third quarter on a 14-1 run and went on to down Richmond Heights in a Division IV state semifinal on Friday, 59-49.

The Spartans had led at halftime, 25-23, before the Knights went on their run.

“No one should hold their heads,” Richmond Heights coach Quentin Rogers said. “You guys have created a legacy. You’ve got a whole community, a lot of energy; your energy’s brought a new school. It’s a whole change in everything. They wanted to win this, but what they’ve done is very, very impactful and there’s millions of kids who can’t say that.”

Richmond Heights pulled to within 46-44 at one point but the Knights again used an 8-0 run to create space and held off the Spartans the rest of the way.

Curtis Houston closed out his career with a team-high 13 points.

“It was a real big experience,” Houston said. “I loved it. The game didn’t end how I wanted it to, but it was a great experience.”

The Spartans, who finished the year with a 21-7 record, will return four starters next season in Gbolahan Adio, Anthony Maxie, Jevontae Jones and Jamarr Talbert.

Their experience in the state tournament no doubt will pay dividends for the Spartans next winter.
