West Geauga’s volleyball team apparently wasn’t pleased with the 10th seed they drew at the Division II Jefferson District.
The Wolverines opened tournament play with an upset of No. 7 Niles McKinley on Wednesday, 3-0.
“Opening the postseason with a win was a big confidence booster for us,” West Geauga coach Amber Baker said. “We weren’t sure what to expect out of Niles McKinley, so we went in thinking we had our work cut out for us.”
West Geauga won the match in dominating fashion, 25-15, 25-14, 25-17.
“We came in tough with strong hitting from Riley Elliott, McKenna Clayman, Lauren Lance and Alyssa Ranallo,” Baker said. “We used both of our setters to try some new offensive plays and that worked for us. Our passing was good tonight as well.”
With the win, the Wolverines advanced to Saturday’s sectional championship game against No. 2 Lake Catholic, a 2017 Division II state semifinalist.
“Going into Saturday against Lake Catholic is a tall order,” Baker said. “We know it will be an extremely hard match, but we are ready for the task and will bring our A-game ready to compete against the state champ powerhouse.”
