Wickliffe holds off surging Huskies

Wickliffe celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 win over visiting Cardinal on Monday.

It was those honorees that did most of the damage as seniors Ana Stjepanovic, Jaina Buttari and Cassidy Haines scored all three of the Blue Devils’ goals.

“Our seniors came up big on senior night scoring all three goals and adding an assist, while Amy (Apgar), Camryn (Klein) and Paxton (Orndoff) played tough defense with Cassidy,” Wickliffe coach Steve Gribovicz said. “Lauren (Hogan) had some opportunities in the game as well.”

Wickliffe led 2-0 at halftime as the Huskies, who had won three straight entering the game, kept things interesting.

“Cardinal did well on their defensive half to limit our quality opportunities with fresh legs rotating in, while their goalkeeper came up with many saves,” Gribovicz said.

Senior Caitlyn Henderson and junior Mia Welms both added assists and junior Kaylee Lauriel finished with her eighth shutout of the season.

“We had a good overall team performance by each girl on the team to preserve our eighth clean sheet of the year. Our scoring plays were nice pieces set up in the flow of attack,” Gribovicz said. “I think the biggest play was when Cassidy Haines moves up in the formation and scored her first goal of the year, possibly career.”

Cardinal senior Kayla Valentine recorded 17 saves for the Huskies.
