Wickliffe opens season with big win over Harvey

Wickliffe scored in the first minute of its season-opening win against visiting Harvey on Friday. The Blue Devils added seven more goals to down the Red Raiders, 8-0.

“We played well within the team formation both offensively and defensively to set up our attack and slow the opponent down,” said Wickliffe coach Steve Gribovicz. “Scoring our first goal in the one minute mark helped to relieve some first-game jitters and allow the team to settle down tonight.”

Morgan Gabriel, Joelle Banks and Caitlyn Henderson each found the net twice for the Blue Devils while Jenna Melaragno and Massey Andrykovitch both scored one goal.

Melanie Tennant, Bryanna Butler, Henderson and Banks all recorded one assist in the win.

Kaylee Lauriel notched her first clean sheet of the season for Wickliffe while Harvey’s Dayanna Hernandez recorded 12 saves on 20 shots.

“We had great support from the student body, staff, (Wickliffe) band, parents/families, and community tonight which propelled the team to perform at a high level,” Gribovicz said.
