Youthful Hornets ready to defend CVC crown

Kirtland’s boys’ golf team finished the 2018 season with a perfect 11-0 record in dual meets and a Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division championship banner.

The Hornets begin their defense of that crown with a youthful roster after the graduation of a large and talented senior class.

“We will be young after graduating six seniors but the experience will help us get better each match and tournament,” Kirtland coach Sam Kless said.

The Hornets do return two starters in senior captain Cici Anness, who was a district qualifier last season, and sophomore Victor Alfieri.

“Cici will be in the No. 2 or No. 3 spot competing against the boys and gearing up for the girls’ state tournament. Her leadership and work ethics are truly incredible,” Kless said. “Victor has really unlimited potential should be our No. 1 or No. 2 player most of the year. He truly has the ability to be very, very good.”

While the Hornets have some holes in the lineup, the goals remain the same.

“(We want) to compete in every match and to improve each day,” Kless said.
