Chagrin Division title to be settled soon

Perry’s 65-63 win at Harvey on Thursday put the Pirates in position to win the Chagrin Valley Conference but they’ll need some help if they hope to win an outright championship.

The Pirates improved to 10-3 in league play with one league contest remaining. If Perry wins at Orange on Tuesday, the Pirates will earn at least a share of the conference title.

With identical 10-3 records, Beachwood and Harvey also remain in the hunt to win the division.

Perry has the best chance of winning the title outright as the Pirates are 2-0 against Harvey and 1-1 against Beachwood. If Perry wins at Orange and Harvey beats Beachwood on Feb. 22, the Pirates would stand alone at the top of the league standings.

Both Perry and Harvey would finish 11-3 in the league play but the Pirates would win the title based on their 2-0 record against the Red Raiders.

If Perry beats Orange and Beachwood beats Harvey, the title would be shared between the Pirates and Bison, who are 1-1 against each other in head-to-head competition.

A Perry loss at Orange would leave the winner of the Beachwood-Harvey game as the outright league champion.

In short, to win the league title outright, Perry must win at Orange and root for Harvey to beat Beachwood. Harvey needs to beat Beachwood and root for Orange to upset Perry. Beachwood must beat Harvey and hope for Orange to knock off Perry.

If that’s too complicated to follow, check back here in a week and find out which team or teams will hang a new banner in their gymnasium.

Needless to say, the final week of the regular season will fun to watch.
