Cubela the difference in Kirtland’s win over Wickliffe

Marko Cubela’s first-half goal was the difference in Kirtland’s 1-0 win over visiting Wickliffe in a Chagrin Valley Conference crossover game on Thursday.

With the win, their fourth in six days, the Hornets improved to 8-1 overall.

“Playing four games in six days has taken its toll on us,” Kirtland coach John Valentic said. “We showed grit, but we are tired and banged up. It was especially evident in the final third.”

Peter Mijic-Barisic assisted on Cubela’s goal.

“It felt great to help the team out but it was a tough battle the whole game trying to stay in the lead,” Cubela said. “We had multiple players out from injuries during the six days, but players stepped up to fill the spots and we all got through the games at a good pace.”

Tyler Banyasz recorded one save for the Hornets in notching his fourth straight shutout and seventh overall.

Kirtland travels to Grand Valley on Sept. 17.
