West Geauga, Hawken win Chagrin Division cross country titles

GATES MILLS—West Geauga’s boys and Hawken’s girls’ teams both claimed Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division titles at the 2020 CVC Cross Country Championships at Hawken on Saturday.

West Geauga won the boys’ race with 40 points while defending champion Geneva and Hawken rounded out the top three with 49 and 71 points, respectively.

Hawken cruised to the title in the girls’ race with 39 points. Defending champion Edgewood finished second with 69 and West Geauga was third with 88 points.

Individually, Harvey’s J.T. Basco won the boys’ race and Hawken’s Ella Gilson claimed her fourth straight CVC title in the girls’ race.

Basco finished in 17:10 while Geneva’s Alex Reese finished second in 17:27.

The next three runners were separated by just two seconds.

West Geauga’s Patrick Garrett was third in 17:31, Hawken’s Nick Garcia-Whitko placed fourth in 17:32 and Geneva’s Zachary Reese finished fifth in 17:33.

Gilson dominated the field again in winning her fourth straight individual title.

She won her first two in the Valley Division and defended the Chagrin Division title she won last season.

Gilson finished in 18:49, over a minute faster than teammate Juliana Metz, who finished second in 19:54.

Orange’s Kate Halloran (3rd, 20:25), Edgewood’s Lydia Randolph (4th, 20:59) and Hawken’s Elana Padley (5th, 21:03) rounded out the top five.
