Wills leads Wickliffe past North

Eliza Wills scored a pair of goals to lead Wickliffe to a 2-1 nonconference win over visiting North on Tuesday.

Wills found the net once in each half to give the Blue Devils their first win of the season.

“This was a well-earned victory for us tonight,” said Wickliffe coach Steve Gribovicz. “We were more organized than in our previous game and communicated better on the field. The team moved better as a whole and took their opportunities within the system. We were aggressive and played a physical game with great effort.”

Wills, a freshman, made the most of her first varsity home game.

Her first goal tied the score at 1-1.

“(It was) on an outside-in buildup off a pass from Morgan Gabriel that she was able to get a touch on with her right and then finish in the net,” Gribovicz said. “The go-ahead goal was a PK two minutes into the second half. She was fouled in the box, then stepped up and placed the ball in the left side of the net. Eliza showed true nerves for a freshman in her second varsity game.”

Kaylee Lauriel recorded 11 saves in the net for the Blue Devils.

North dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Bridgette Karr scored for the Rangers and Katia Blatnik and Carly Rutkowski finished with four and three saves, respectively.

“Eastlake North put on good pressure and played a competitive game, which made this game very entertaining to watch and be a part of tonight,” Gribovicz said. “This was a true team win as many players had to play multiple positions throughout the game.”
